Episode 41: Tied Up In Knots

J.R. and Sue Ellen stood outside of the room number that they had been given by the desk clerk at the Kiwi Acres Bed and Breakfast—John Ross' room. J.R. knocked on the door. "John Ross? John Ross, you in there?"

Sue Ellen took the key that she had been given and inserted it into the lock. It clicked and she pushed the door open. There was no sign of John Ross or Pamela Rebecca in the room anywhere. "Oh no J.R., something's wrong."

"Now relax Sue Ellen. The police are looking for Akbar. Chances are John Ross and Pamela Rebecca are down at the beach or something, just having fun."

"I'll go ask the desk clerk if he's seen them leave," said Sue Ellen.

"Good idea. I'm going down to the beach to look around. Maybe they're at the pool."

"I'll meet you down there soon then," said Sue Ellen.

Sue Ellen turned to leave, but J.R. called out to her. "Sue Ellen, be careful. This guy is dangerous."

"I know how to handle myself J.R."

Pam was sitting looking over some potential buildings for her new company when her gaze fell on the envelope that she had received. Curious, she opened it and a certificate and a diary fell out.

She lifted the journal and was about to read it, when the phone rang.

"Pamela Ewing."

The voice on the other end made her freeze. "Mark, what do you want?"

"Pam, please don't hang up on me. We have to talk, I need to apologize."

Pam counted to ten in the hopes that her voice would return. "What could you possibly have to apologize for Mark?

He checked his watch. "I can meet you in an hour at Tuscany Restaurant?"

Pam nodded. "Alright. You better explain why it is that you felt the need to harass me at my wedding and now."

Mark sighed. "I promise you I'll tell you all I know."

As she hung up, Pam opened the diary and a note came out. I promise that one day, I'll come back for you

I'm leaving you in the safest of hands, your father's.

No matter what he and I have gone through, remember that I love you.

"Well, hi strong guy," said Donna walking into the stable at Southfork.

Lucas put down the bucket of water he had been using to water one of the horses. "Hello Mrs. Dowling."

"Your Daddy told me you came down here. I saw him up at the house. They're coming along nicely on the construction aren't they?"

"I guess so," said Lucas. "Will you be moving in Southfork when they get finished?" He surely hoped not.

"I don't know Lucas. I'll have to talk to Miss Ellie, but I don't think Ray is moving back to Southfork. Dusty Farlow left Ray's ranch to Clayton in his will. If Clayton will sell, I'm sure Ray will buy it back and move into it."

"Oh." Lucas liked living at Southfork. "Are you going to move in with my Dad then?"

Donna laughed. "I don't think so Lucas. At least not until we're married."

Lucas' eyes were wide. Had she said married? "You're getting married?"

"No! We haven't talked about that yet. But it's always a thought."

Lucas definitely wasn't going to let them get married, but what could a thirteen year old kid do?

Karen and Todd had spent the day together, again. They found out that they really clicked with each other. Things were weighing heavily on Todd's mind, though. Bobby still had not called. He tried to be happy just being with Karen, but it was difficult. Originally, he intended to make contact with her solely as a way to gain an ally and supporter in his quest to get Bobby to win him April's estate. With Karen separated from Christopher that would be difficult. But Todd quickly found that he liked Karen. Not in the romantic sense, but he thought that she was sweet, and a lot of fun. Karen had told him of Christopher's tryst with Carla, how it came out, and how Eric was being so supportive.

"It's really scary Todd," Karen said. "I'm starting to find myself very attracted to Eric."

"What's scary about that? It's completely normal to be attracted to someone else, even if you are married. It's actually acting on that attraction that causes problems. To pipe in my two cents, I don't think you should. I've never met Christopher, but he sounds like a great guy. Maybe things can work out between the two of you."

"I still haven't talked to him yet." Karen remarked.

"Well then talk to the guy for God's sake! From everything you've told me, you have been through too much not to. This Eric guy sounds a little sketchy too." Todd was not convinced that this Eric character just "happened" to be on a date with the stripper that slept with Christopher in the same restaurant, on the same night, as Karen and Christopher. Karen seemed to accept it because she trusted Eric. Todd thought that this merited further investigation, not only for Karen's sake, but also for his own. After all, there might still be a way to get Bobby Ewing to look favorably upon him after all —- through his son. Todd smiled at the thought.

Karen put her arm in his and her head on his shoulders. "Thanks Todd, I think I might just talk to Christopher."

The two continued to stroll down the street towards Karen's hotel while Christopher Ewing watched from behind them, fuming with jealousy.

Margaret, who had grown tired of waiting in the car for Donna, got out and walked up to Southfork, looking in awe at the ranch.

"It's big isn't it?"

Margaret was startled to see Ray, but her mom was nowhere to be found. "Yes sir, it's huge. Do you own it?"

Ray laughed. "No, my brother Bobby owns it. I've been living here lately though."

"Who else lives here?" asked Margaret.

"Well, there's my other brother, J.R. He's a real character, have to watch out for him. There's his ex-wife Sue Ellen. She lived there too, but I don't know if she will when we all move back in. There is their son and your cousin, John Ross. He's got a pretty little girl; her name is Megan Eleanor. Megan's named after Miss Ellie, J.R. and Bobby's mother. Bobby and his wife Pam live here with their son Christopher and his wife Karen. My niece Lucy lives there off and on. Her Mom and Dad, Gary and Val, lived here for a while, but now they living in California. I mentioned Miss Ellie, she lives there with her husband Clayton.."

"Margaret?"

Once again, Margaret turned around. "Hi," she said.

"Well! I can't believe this. My how you've grown since I last saw you." It was Miss Ellie.

"Maggie, that's your-" Ray hesitated, "-Grandmother. That's Miss Ellie."

Margaret smiled. "Hi Grandma."

"Hello Margaret. I don't believe I've seen you since that time Clayton and I visited Washington a few years back. I almost didn't recognize you!"

"Ray was just telling me about who lived at Southfork. I didn't know so many people lived there!" said Margaret.

"Ray," said Miss Ellie, "where will Donna be living?"

"She's staying in a hotel right now," said Ray.

"Well, we can't have that. Margaret, why don't you let me show you around the house. Then I'll take you upstairs and show you your room."

"My room?" said Margaret.

"Yes. I won't have you and your mother living in some hotel room when there is plenty of room here at Southfork."

Margaret smiled. "Wow! But what if Mom doesn't want to?"

"I think that's a great idea young lady," said Donna.

"Really Mom?"

"If Miss Ellie thinks it's okay," said Donna, putting her arm around Ray.

"Of course it's okay. Why don't you and Ray come in as well Donna," said Ellie. "Everything is almost finished inside."

Minutes later, they were inside the house, looking around at the newly remodeled living room.

"This is nice," said Donna.

"It is," said Margaret, "But when can we see my room?"

"Right now if you'd like," said Ellie. She walked up the stairs past a few workers and entered the hallway where the worst of the damage from the explosion had been. They passed the nursery where several people were painting. Ellie pushed open the door to the room that had formerly been Lucy's. Lucy had already claimed one of the larger guest rooms for her own. "How is this one Margaret?"

Margaret walked in amongst the smell of paint and lumber. "I love it!" She ran over to the window and looked out. The pool was down below. "And a pool too!"

Ellie, Ray, and Donna all shared a hearty laugh. Margaret just looked at them with amazement.

Gary Ewing had been wracking his brain trying to figure out a way to get out of his business arrangement with Jack and Abby. Though he hated having to meet with his cousin and ex-wife regularly to discuss their tied Ewing Oil shares, he wanted to find a way to make sure that his children would still benefit from his ownership of 7.5% of his father's company. It's going to be bad enough having them living right across the street when we all settle back into the cul-de-sac, he thought, but I just can't stomach having to see them drooling all over each other every time we meet. That damned Jack just loves to shove the fact that he has Abby in every other man's face, especially mine!

Lucy had been wracking her brain trying to figure out a way to make her Uncle J.R. allow her to come to work at Ewing Oil. All the various events that had been happening around her had changed her, made her more serious, and she wanted to channel that newfound energy toward something productive; something she and her parents and grandparents could be proud of. There just has to be more to life than jumping from boyfriend to boyfriend and fighting with Afton! I know that I could prove a very valuable asset to the family fortune if J.R. would just give me a chance! How am I going to make him do that? She questioned herself.

Val hasn't been any help in figuring all this out. She seems to think that I should give Jack a chance to be close to the only family he has: ME. What a thought! Why can't he just go back to Dallas and be familial with J.R.. They definitely have more in common, Gary thought. Hmm, maybe Momma could help me figure this out, but the only thing is that I'm not sure where to reach her. The family's scattered at various hotels in Dallas since that bomb went off at Southfork on Bobby's wedding day. Sheesh, what a mess! In that context, maybe having to deal with Abby isn't quite so bad! Gary laughed to himself.

Lucy was just about to give up on ideas, for now, regarding claiming her place at Ewing Oil when she thought, YES! Lucy, why didn't you think of this before!? God, no other than my own father just happens to OWN 7.5% of the company! I think it's time to call daddy.

Excited, Lucy fumbled for her address book and found the page with her mother and father's temporary phone number on it. They, too, were being forced to live in a hotel suite since their home was destroyed in an earthquake late last year. She found the number and hurriedly dialed.

"Hello?" Gary answered.

"Daddy? It's Lucy!"

"Well, hi, Luc -- uhm -- your mother isn't here. She's been out doing research for her new book."

"Daddy-" God, it's always felt so strange calling him that! Lucy thought. "I -- actually, I called to talk with you."

"You DID?" Gary suddenly found himself grinning from ear to ear and proudly thinking, You know, I think this is the first time she's ever called to talk to ME about something! "Well, what can I do for you, Lucy?"

"I want to talk to you about Ewing Oil, Daddy!"

"Oh my God Clayton! Why didn't you tell me about Dusty?"

"I don't know Ellie. The time just didn't seem right. But I've got to fly to Venice tonight."

"Let me go pack my things."

"Ellie, I'm going by myself."

"No you're not Clayton. You have no business flying alone in your condition. You've just found out about Muriel and now your son…"

"Where is Sue Ellen?"

"She went to Hawaii with J.R."

"What on earth for?" Clayton asked.

"They think John Ross and Pamela Rebecca are in trouble out there."

"I don't suppose she'll be back for the funeral."

"I'm not sure Clayton. But I'm sure she wouldn't miss it unless she had something urgent to take care of."

"Well, I'm going to pack my things," said Clayton. He walked over to the wardrobe and started pulling out clothes. "You are welcome to come along if you'd like."

"And I will." Ellie went to the closet and came out with two suitcases.

John Ross, after having searched for an hour, returned to his hotel room to find the door cracked. He cautiously walked in, looked around, and instantly noticed the note taped to the dresser mirror —- the note that had not been there when J.R. and Sue Ellen had been.

He took the note and read it:

I have Pamela Rebecca. She is safe for now, but if you ever plan on seeing her again, then follow my directions carefully.

John Ross continued to read the instructions and wadded up the note, throwing it onto the bed. "Laysan Island," John Ross mumbled. He picked up the phone book that sat on the nightstand and flipped through the pages. John Ross then picked up the phone and dialed. "Yes. I need a boat. Just a day should do it. No, I don't know how to operate one. A pilot would be great. I don't care about the cost, but I need it within the next ten minutes. Ok, thanks."

John Ross hung up the phone.

Mark was just stepping out of his car when Pam's car came roaring up beside his.

Mark's grin faded as the angry woman came rushing towards him. "Hi Pam."

She was barely under control as she hissed. "What the HELL were you trying to do?" She reached into her bag and pulled out a journal. "What does THIS mean?"

Mark shook his head. "Pam, I have no idea what that is. But we do need to talk."

Katherine watched from her car, safely hidden from view. When she saw the angry woman pull out the journal, her grin became almost contented.

She reached across to the limo window and tapped. "I've seen enough, take me back to my hotel please."

"What are you going to Laysan Island for?"

"Somebody I know is out there. Is it a big island?"

"Heck no. It's mostly deserted. There's an exclusive resort hotel on one side of it. One the other side there's an abandoned research center of some sort."

"Oh," said John Ross. "I'll need you to wait for me. I shouldn't be long."

"No problem," said the boat captain.

"What the hell are you going to do with me?" said Pamela Rebecca. She struggled to break free from the ropes that bound her hands and feet.

"My dear, that all depends on the course of action your boyfriend takes. If he delivers the ransom as he's supposed to, then maybe you'll go free. If he tries anything funny, then you are both dead," Akbar said quietly.

Screen freeze on Pamela Rebecca's face
